Elvis’s manager was kind of evil. Dolly Parton wouldn’t let Elvis cover “I Will Always Live You” because when Elvis covered a song, the songwriter had to sign over half of the publishing rights to Elvis. Jerry Reed got one over on em though with Guitar Man.

They had to hunt down Jerry to play the guitar because nobody could get the sound right due to Jerry’s unique finger picking style and weird tunings, and nobody mentioned anything to Jerry about the terms until the song was recorded.

When asked to sign the paper, Jerry said something like “Elvis is happy with song, you can either tell him this was a waste of time or shove that paper up your ass.”

Jerry didn’t sign over publishing rights and Elvis had a hit with the song.

Just another reason why I love Jerry Reed
